Assessing your current risk

How much security do you need

There is no absolute security for every site. The level of security you need will be a function of a number of things which are particular to your environment and organisation.

Risk is a function of the vulnerabilities to assets, times the threats, times the consequences of a breach of security:

Risk = (Vulnerabilities x Threats x Consequences)

Security = Risk x Security Precautions

The amount of security you require is generally directly proportional to the risk. However, it should be noted that just one vulnerability, such as stealing the data in a proprietary database, can be enough to severely impact or even destroy a company or organisation’s reputation. Therefore quantifying each risk has to be done individually and stand alone from other risks, in order to arrive at the required Security Precautions for it.
